LCJ Heads to Nashville for an Insightful and Engaging Fall Meeting

LCJ is heading to Nashville for our Fall meeting! As we conclude a consequential year for civil litigation rules reform and plan for another, this meeting is not to be missed. Meeting Co-Chairs Julie Tersigni (Kenvue, Inc.) and Barbara Smith Tyson (Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP) have organized an outstanding program from Wednesday evening, December 4th through Friday morning, December 6th.

We have an stellar lineup of speakers planned, including:

  • Chief Justice Holly Kirby, Supreme Court of Tennessee.

  • Hon. Jonathan Skrmetti, Tennessee Attorney General.

  • Jason Menges, Vice President and General Counsel, Nissan North America.

  • Justice Becky Kourlis, former Colorado Supreme Court Justice.

  • Justice Bridget McCormack, former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice.

  • Justice Harold Melton, former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice.

  • Hon. Ashok Pinto, Director of the Intellectual Policy Group, Intel Corporation.

  • Aviva Wein, Associate General Counsel and Litigation Policy Group Leader, Johnson & Johnson.

  • Mark Putnam, corporate and political communications expert, Putnam Partners.

  • Russ Schriefer, corporate and political advertising and consulting expert, Strategic Partners Media.

Tennessee Attorney General Skrmetti is our special guest for our opening reception. Our Tennessee Host Committee invites you to connect with colleagues at Butler Snow’s offices overlooking Nashville and the Cumberland River on Wednesday, December 4th.

Our program at the Nashville Renaissance Hotel, on Thursday, December 5th, gets off to an engaging start featuring a conversation with Nissan General Counsel Jason Menges about timely issues and priorities on the minds of corporate GCs.

We plan to tackle a wide range of topics throughout the day. LCJ’s “Ask About TPLF” initiative will change the way courts and parties handle TPLF disclosure – and our panel of experts will discuss LCJ’s plans and the latest developments in how courts are responding to TPLF disclosure requests. Recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions are upending litigation approaches with the end of the Chevron doctrine. We will look at unexpected changes that could shape the post-Chevron landscape, and how civil litigation rules could help shape the terrain. We will also consider “the Next Wave of Discovery on Discovery,” and discuss how generative AI is raising rule issues and unexpected consequences for discovery strategies.

Plan to get caught up on LCJ’s priority initiatives and participate in a discussion of how members can engage in them in 2025. We wrap up the day by considering creative new rules proposals with LCJ’s fun and educational “Shark Tank Season 3 – A Field of Dreams!”

On Thursday evening, join colleagues for conversation and refreshments, and then enjoy a special evening with The Warren Brothers. Brett and Brad Warren have penned songs that have become country music staples and they will entertain us with their memorable songs and captivating stories.

On Friday, December 6th, we will hold breakout sessions where LCJ corporate and law firm attendees are invited to provide input on LCJ’s priorities and share thoughts about major issues.

Following our breakout sessions, we will welcome an esteemed panel, which will include Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Kirby, on how we can address declining public trust in the courts.

The plaintiff’s bar has offered a significant rule proposal that would make remote testimony the rule rather than the exception, and LCJ is responding. Our panel will consider the proposed radical changes that would impact corporate and other witnesses and discuss better alternatives.

Coming off a turbulent and historic election season, we conclude the program by looking at some of the best political ads of the current election cycle, what they say about public attitudes, and consider lessons for litigators looking to communicate with those voters/jurors.

We wrap up at noon on Friday.
